• While on foot patrol, some of our officers saw a man on an electric bicycle crash into a trash can, scattering garbage into the street. The man then got back onto the bike, weaved his way across the roadway, and crashed into a nearby curb.

    While talking with the man, our team noticed that his eyes were red and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also a smell similar to that of an adult beverage billowing from his breath. When asked how much he had to drink that evening, the man replied, “not a lot”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the electric bike while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with DUI (Less Safe).

    One of our officers received a report in reference to a possible theft.

    While speaking with our teammate, the victim stated that someone had stolen his backpack during a brief period that it was left unattended on the beach. The victim further stated that the contents of the bag included personal jewelry items that were valued in the thousands of dollars.

    A report was filed, and the victim was provided with information for follow-up.

  • One of our officers pulled a vehicle over for failing to maintain its lane and randomly stopping in the middle of the roadway.

    During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. He was then placed under arrest and charged accordingly.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for driving the wrong way on a one-way street and having a cracked windshield.

    During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the vehicle’s license plate had been reported stolen out of South Carolina. The driver was then placed under arrest and charged with Wrong Way on a One Way, Windshield Violation, No License on Person, Improper Transfer of Plate, and Theft by Receiving.

  • Shortly after 1:00 AM, one of our officers was on patrol in a residential area when he noticed a vehicle that had been stopped at stop sign for a significant amount of time. After leaving the sign, the vehicle began to weave back and forth on the roadway. As it approached another stop sign, the driver activated their right turn signal, and then the left, before finally making a slow wide turn. Finding all of this suspicious, the officer conducted a check of the vehicle’s license plate, which revealed that the registration was suspended.

    After stopping the vehicle, the officer immediately noticed an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink wafting through the open window. While speaking with our teammate, the driver initially claimed to be lost, before admitting that they had been trying to avoid another officer.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Suspended Registration, No Insurance, and DUI (Less Safe).

    One of our officers received a report from a local golf cart rental company in reference to a possible theft.

    While speaking with our teammate, an employee of the rental company stated that a cart was two days overdue to be returned. A report was filed, and the company was provided with information for follow-up.

    Later that same day, the employee called back to inform our officers that the cart had finally been returned.

  • One of our officers responded to the intersection of Fort and Van Horne in reference to abandoned property.

    Upon her arrival, the officer found a bag of white powder that field tested positive for Cocaine. The drugs were then transported to our evidence room to await destruction. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    A man came to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to a possible scam. While speaking with one of our officers, the man explained that he was currently on the phone with a person claiming to be a deputy from Gwinnett County. The man further stated that the “deputy” told him that he had a warrant for failing to appear in court, and he needed to pay $15,000 to settle the matter.

    At that time, our officer took the phone to speak with the “deputy”, who abruptly ended the call. The officer then explained that a legitimate law enforcement officer would not request payment in lieu of being arrested.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

  • One of our officers responded to a short-term vacation rental on 2nd Terrace in reference to found property.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that he had located a firearm lying on top of an armoire in the Master Bedroom. The officer then took custody of the weapon and deposited it into our evidence room for safekeeping.

    Later that evening, one of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to use its headlights after dark.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man admitted to “six beers”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Use Headlights After Dark, Driving While License Suspended, and DUI (Less Safe).

    While making arrangements to turn the vehicle over to a sober passenger, the officer realized that there were also three young children in the backseat. As a result, the driver received an additional charge of Endangering a Child While DUI.

  • Officers responded to a local food stand in reference to a possible burglary.

    While speaking with our teammates, an employee stated that after reporting for work that morning, they discovered that the back door had been significantly damaged.

    During the course of the investigation, officers learned that one of the co-owners had accidentally locked themselves inside and had to damage the door to escape. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 53mph in a 30mph zone.

    While talking to the driver, officers noticed an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink flowing through the open window. During the course of their conversation, the woman admitted to having a beer on the beach approximately an hour before.

    A subsequent investigation revealed additional evidence which suggested the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, No Insurance, Suspended Registration, and DUI (Less Safe).

    While making arrangements for the vehicle, the officer noticed that one of the passengers was a toddler. As a result, the woman received an additional charge of Endangering a Child While DUI.

  • While dealing with another call for service, officers saw two men approach and attempt to provoke a fight with a third. After the trio was separated, the two aggressors walked away briefly, before one returned and spit directly in the victim’s face. As a fight ensued between suspect and victim, officers rushed over and ordered them to “break it up”. When they refused, one of our officers tased the suspect, effectively bringing an end to the confrontation.

    Our team then placed both of the original aggressors under arrest and transported them to the Tybee Island Police Department. During the paperwork process, it was discovered that one of the men was in possession of a fake ID and was only 20 years old.

    Suspect #1 was then charged with Battery, Public Drunkenness, and Disorderly Conduct.

    Suspect #2 was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Public Drunkenness, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor, and Forgery in the First Degree.

    Both men were ultimately released to the custody of the military police due to being on active duty at the time.
