JOB SUMMARY

The Communications Officer receives calls for assistance from the public and dispatches appropriate public safety personnel. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates the City’s 911 telephone, TDD, and switchboard system.

  • Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio and telephone communications traffic for emergency and non-emergency situations.

  • Receives and screens all incoming telephone calls from the public and other public safety agencies and categorizes and prioritizes calls.

  • Dispatches appropriate emergency personnel to incident locations.

  • Maintains a continuous log of incoming telephone and radio calls and logs incoming calls for all participating agencies.

  • Monitors and routes incoming messages from state computer network, enters and removes information as requested into the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) network, including information on wanted or missing persons or stolen articles, and validates information on a monthly basis.

  • Assists walk-in individuals

  • Maintains warrants and warrants logbook, records for vehicle release, and employment background checks.

  • Conducts inquiries through GCIC for the Tybee Municipal Court.

  • Receives and dispatches emergency complaints for the Water Department and Department of Public Works when those departments are closed.

  • Monitors cameras throughout the City.

  • Maintains gasoline usage logs for all City departments.

  • Activates severe weather alarm and alarm tests for the City.

  • Assists Animal Control with impounded animals and owner contact.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia. Ability to obtain dispatch certification within the first six (6) months of employment. TAC certification for secondary and primary TAC positions.

Special Requirements: 

This position   requires to work extended hours including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to respond to emergency issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and department policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the regulations and procedures of state crime information centers.

  • Knowledge of the geography and street system of the City.

  • Knowledge of the radio codes used in public safety work.

  • Knowledge of dispatching procedures.

  • Skill in the operation of radio/communications equipment.

  • Skill in the operation of computers.

  • Skill in the use of general office equipment.

  • Skill in dealing with the public.

  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.

  • Skill in making decisions accurately and rapidly.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to use tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed persons.

  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Salary: $24.10 per hour
