• A trash collection worker came to the Tybee Island Police Department to report being threatened with a weapon.

    While speaking with our team, the worker stated that while appraching a residence to collect the trash, an elderly man stepped out of the house with a knife in his hand. After he informed the older man that he was just there for the garbage, the man grabbed the bin and brought it to the worker with the knife still clutched in his other hand. When asked, the worker stated that was the extent of their interaction, and the man never made any threatening movements or remarks.

    Officers then responded to the house in question where they made contact with the elderly resident. While speaking with our team, the man apologized for scaring the worker and stated that he was scared as well due to the trash collection being earlier in the morning than normal.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle after the driver threw a cigarette butt out of the window.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were “glossy” and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There were also open containers of alcohol in plain view, and an odor similar to that of an adult beverage seeping through the window. When asked, the man admitted to having “a few sips of a drink before he left work”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Littering on the Highway, Open Container, Driving While License Suspended, and DUI (.08 or more).

  • Officers responded to a residence on 5th Street in reference to a residential burglar alarm.

    As they were clearing the inside of the residence, part of a rotten floor gave way, causing an officer’s foot to punch through and sustain minor injuries. After ensuring no one else was inside, officers secured the residence and left a contact card for the owner.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Just before midnight, one of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to signal a turn.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that her eyes were “glossy” and that she slurred her words as she spoke. There were also open containers of alcohol in the vehicle, and an odor similar to that of an adult drink wafting through the open window.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Signal, Open Container, and DUI (Less Safe).

    While conducting a search of the woman’s vehicle, officers found a small amount of marijuana, resulting in an additional charge of Possession of Marijuana (less than an ounce).

  • One of our officers responded to Jaycee Park in reference to someone Entering an Auto.

    While talking with our teammate, the victim stated that while walking back to her vehicle, she spotted an elderly woman rummaging through the backseat. The elderly woman then turned to walk away with several of the victim’s belongings, including a hoodie, a jacket, and her wallet, which contained credit cards and the victim’s ID. While catching up to the woman and retrieving her items, the victim noted that she appeared to be in her 70’s, had blonde hair, and utilized a walker.

    Officers checked the area but did not locate anyone matching that description. They then touched base with our local nursing home but were told that it didn’t sound like any of their patients.

    A report was filed, and the victim was provided with information for follow-up.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to use its headlights after dark.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that her eyes were bloodshot and that there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic beverage billowing through her open window.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Use Headlights After Dark, Expired Registration, and DUI (Less Safe).

    Officers responded to an address on Center Street in reference to a suspicious person.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that she returned home to find a Cadillac Escalade parked in her driveway. After hitting the garage door opener, she spotted a man walk out from the side gate access to her backyard. At that time, the woman drove down the street and waited for the man to leave.

    Our team then conducted a security check of the residence and found that everything appeared secure. A report was filed, and the woman was provided with information for follow-up.

  • One of our officers stopped a golf cart for driving on Butler Avenue, a violation of Tybee Island City Ordinance.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were “glossy” and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink lingering around his body. When asked, the man admitted to having “a drink” at a local bar.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the golf cart while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Golf Cart Violations and DUI (Less Safe).

  • Officers responded to the Strand Avenue parking lot in reference to a fight in progress.

    During the investigation, officers determined that the two men involved had come to the beach in the same vehicle. During the course of their day, both men consumed alcohol before eventually fighting one another in the parking lot. Due to the fact that the fight appeared to be mutual, with both men sustaining injuries, they were both placed under arrest and charged with Affray.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding.

    While talking to twenty-year-old driver, the officer noticed that her eyes were “glossy”, and that there was an overwhelming odor of marijuana flowing through the open window. While conducting a search of the vehicle based on probable cause, officers found an open container of alcohol and a nicotine vape.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the young woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Open Container, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor, Possession of Tobacco by a Minor, and DUI (Under 21).

  • Officers responded to a residence on 14th Street in reference to a prowler.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that during the night prior, her security cameras had been activated by motion detection. A review of the footage showed a white male in a dark in color hooded jacket running from her property.

    A report was filed, and the caller was provided with information for follow-up.
