• One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding and having a defective headlight.

While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were watery. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink flowing from his breath. When asked, the man admitted to having “one drink” a while before the stop.

During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Headlight Requirements, and DUI (.08 or more).

  • An officer responded to a local condominium complex in reference to found property. While speaking with our teammate, the caller provided him with a wallet and a pair of sunglasses. The officer then transported those items to the Tybee Island Police Department where they were placed into our property room for safekeeping.

The owner came to the police department and retrieved their items the following day.

  • Officers responded to an address along Highway 80 in reference to an open door. Once on scene, they cleared the residence to ensure there were no intruders inside. After that was complete, they made contact with the tenant and informed him to call us back if anything appeared missing or disturbed.

  • An officer responded to the City of Tybee Island’s South Annex in reference to found property. While speaking with our teammate, Code Compliance personnel provided him with a credit card that was found near Memorial Park. The officer then transported the card to the Tybee Island Police Department and deposited it into our property room for safekeeping.

  • One of our officers received a tip in reference to a reckless driver traveling down Highway 80 with a flat tire.

Shortly thereafter, our teammate found a man sitting in the trunk of his car staring at a spare tire lying in the grass next to him. While checking on the man’s welfare, the officer noticed that his eyes were glazed and he slurred his words as he spoke. During their conversation, the man indicated that he had been driving on a flat tire since Thunderbolt. His missing tire and heavily damaged rim seemed to confirm that story.

During the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Open Container and DUI.

  • At approximately 12:11 PM, officers of the Tybee Island Police Department responded to the area of Highway 80, between Lewis and Campbell Avenues, in reference to a body lying in the marsh. During the course of the preliminary investigation, our team did not find any evidence to suggest that the man’s death was suspicious, or the result of foul play.

In an attempt to provide the man with dignity in death, we confirmed the recovery to local media outlets while providing basic information. Unfortunately, the public nature of the incident has led to rumors and widespread speculation. While we await the official report from the Coroner’s Office, it’s important to know that we have no reason to believe there is any danger to the public in relation to this incident.

As we move forward, our hearts will remain with the man’s friends and loved ones during this difficult time.

    _____

Officers responded to a local gas station in reference to a suspicious person. According to the caller, the man had been stumbling around inside of the store and was believed to have driven there.

Once on scene, officers found a truck parked across two spaces in front of the store with the engine running. While talking with the driver, the officer noticed that his eyelids were droopy and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an adult beverage wafting through his open window. During the course of their conversation, the officer noticed a white film on the driver’s tongue that he believed to be consistent with drug use. When asked, however, the man denied using drugs or alcohol that evening, and claimed that he was “just tired”.

During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Driving While License Suspended and DUI (Less Safe).
