• One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding and failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed the smell of marijuana wafting through her open window. When asked about the odor, the driver admitted to smoking that evening.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the driver had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. He also noticed that her taillights were broken, and her registration had expired almost a month before. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, No License on Person, Taillight Violation, Expired Registration, and DUI (Less Safe).

    Shortly after 6:00AM, dispatch received a call about a man who had just thrown a chair through a window at a local motel. The caller further stated that the man had then gotten into a vehicle and fled the scene.

    While enroute, one of our officers spotted the suspect vehicle failing to maintain its lane and conducted a traffic stop. While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that the man smelled like an alcoholic drink and was bleeding from a cut on one of his hands.

    When asked about the incident at the motel, the man claimed that his female companion had been punched in the face several times by another man. When asked why his hand was bleeding, the man said that “things happened so quickly, he couldn’t recall”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, Open Container, DUI (Less Safe), and Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree.

    One of our officers responded to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to fraud.

    While speaking with the officer, the victim reported that she had been served with paperwork informing her that she was being sued by a Credit Management company. While looking into the matter further, she learned that someone had apparently opened up a line of credit in her name but used the wrong address. The victim further stated that she had retained an attorney and intends to fight the issue in court.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Later that evening, officers responded to the area of Tybrisa in reference to a fight. According to the caller, one of the participants had been overheard saying that they were “getting a gun”.

    While speaking with our team, witnesses stated that the altercation had been between a man and his companions in the 15th Street parking lot. They further stated that during the incident, the man began to throw random objects at his friends, as well as neighboring vehicles, potentially damaging one in the process.

    Though all of the parties had already left the scene, the witnesses were able to provide our team with a cell phone video of the incident. A report was filed, and a copy of the video was uploaded into evidence.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding.

    During his walk up to the car, the officer watched the driver and passenger pass a cigarette back and forth between them. At the same time, the smell of marijuana wafted through the open window. While talking to the driver, the officer also noticed that his eyes were red, and that he spoke slowly.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, No License on Person, Suspended Registration, and DUI (Less Safe).

    A concerned citizen approached one of our officers and gave him an iPhone they had found. Upon closer inspection, the officer found cash hidden behind the phone case.

    Using Apple’s virtual assistant, “Siri”, the officer was able to contact the owner’s mother. After learning that they were still on the beach, the officer responded to their location and reunited the owner with their money and phone. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Later that same day, another iPhone was turned into the Tybee Island Police Department. Once again, officers utilized “Siri” to contact the owner’s mother and advise them of the phone’s whereabouts. A short time later, the owner arrived at the police department and retrieved their property.

    Officers responded to a local nursing home in reference to two employees allegedly threatening a third with firearms.

    During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the three employees had been involved in an argument inside the facility. While it doesn’t appear that anyone actually brandished a gun, one was reportedly seen inside of an employee’s purse.

    Though two of the three had already left by the time that officers arrived on scene, the director asked that all of them be banned from the property. A report was filed, and the facility was placed on extra patrol.

  • Just after midnight, officers received a call in reference to a suspicious vehicle parked behind a closed business. Upon their arrival, officers watched a large cloud of smoke escape through the vehicle’s open window, followed by the smell of marijuana. While speaking to the teenaged occupants, our team observed several “blunts” lying in plain view.

    A subsequent search of the vehicle based on probable cause revealed several vape pens, a kitchen scale, several packs of blunt wraps, and a bottle of liquor. There was also a tupperware container filled with marijuana, a spice grinder, and a “Hello Kitty” bong.

    Both of the vehicle’s occupants were then placed under arrest. The teenaged male was charged with Loitering or Prowling and Possession of Tobacco by a Minor. Meanwhile, his female companion was charged with Loitering or Prowling, Possession of Tobacco by a Minor, and Possession of Alcohol by a Minor.

    Officers responded to an address on Butler Avenue in reference to harassment.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that her daughter’s ex-boyfriend had been constantly throwing rocks at their house in the middle of the night. She added that he would occasionally come up to the front door and knock or ring the bell before leaving. During the course of their conversation, the caller was able to provide officers with video depicting some of the activity. A report was filed, and the video was uploaded into evidence.

    Officers responded to the area of Tybrisa Street in reference to a Hit and Run.

    While speaking with our team, a witness stated that she watched a vehicle back into another before fleeing the scene. Using the license plate number provided by the witness, officers were able to utilize our FLOCK system to obtain images of the vehicle both coming onto and leaving Tybee Island. Upon closer inspection, officers were able to determine that the second photo showed fresh damage consistent with the accident. A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    During his walk up to the vehicle, the officer was able to smell the odor of marijuana wafting through the open window. In addition, the driver’s eyes were “glossy”, and her pupils appeared dilated. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a partially burned marijuana cigarette and a cup containing water and ashes.

    Throughout the course of the investigation, the woman was argumentative up to the point that she decided to quit speaking to the officer all together. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane and DUI (Less Safe).

  • While on patrol in the area of Tybrisa and Strand, an officer observed a large group of people attacking a young man. As the officer approached, the attackers ran away. When asked if he knew his assailants, the victim replied, “No”. After being checked by Emergency Medical personnel, he too, left the scene.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    While assisting with that fight call, another officer was approached by a concerned citizen about a fight taking place further up Tybrisa Street.

    While jogging to investigate, the officer was confronted by a young man who told him, “You’re next!”. As the officer watched, the young man puffed out his chest and assumed an aggressive stance, clearly looking for a fight. Believing this man to be one of the suspects involved, the officer approached to detain him. At the same time, the suspect spotted a second officer approaching from the rear and attempted to run away.

    As he did so, the first officer grabbed his shoulder, and was pulled into a nearby bicycle rack, injuring his hand and wrist. The suspect then led officers on a short foot pursuit, which ended with him being tased. During the fall, the suspect sustained injuries to his face.

    While placing the suspect under arrest, our team learned that he was sixteen. He was then treated by Emergency Medical Personnel and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Felony Obstruction.

    During the course of the investigation, officers learned that a second suspect, reportedly armed with a gun, had been seen running towards Atlantic Avenue. Our team checked the area but were unable to locate anyone matching the description.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Officers responded to an address on Silver Avenue in reference to a fight. While speaking with our team, the victim stated that he and a group of friends had been sitting on their balcony, watching a small party taking place on the street. The victim further stated that he began to joke with one of the partygoers, which resulted in the group throwing beer cans at his friends.

    After going downstairs to ask the group why they were throwing things, the victim was allegedly punched in the face twice. A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

  • One of our officers responded to the area of Tybrisa Street in reference to a man sleeping on a bench. When asked for his name, the man replied, “Frog”. When asked for his REAL name, he once again insisted that it was “Frog”. After a little more conversation, the man finally provided something that sounded like an actual name and date of birth.

    As it turns out, however, you can’t trust a man that thinks he’s an amphibian. After releasing him from the scene, officers learned that the name and date of birth provided were incorrect, and the slippery suspect actually had an active warrant through another jurisdiction.

    Later that day, our team caught up to him just a hop-and-skip away and placed him under arrest. He was then transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for his non-local warrant.

    Officers responded to a local restaurant in reference to harassment.

    While speaking with our team, the manager stated that an older man had been coming into the restaurant to try and flirt with his underage employees and to ask where he can buy meth.

    While reviewing surveillance footage, officers immediately recognized the man due to his similar behavior in other local establishments.

    A report was filed, and management asked that the suspect be formally banned.

  • Officers responded to a local condominium complex in reference to damage to property.

    While speaking with our team, management stated that the complex had received multiple complaints about a group of teenagers being loud and damaging property. They then gave officers access to video footage from the night before.

    While reviewing the video, officers watched a group of three teens working together to break the entrance gate, so that they could drive a car through. After locating the car in the parking lot, our team was able to make contact with the group and their guardian. Though the teens claimed that the incident was an accident, management insisted that they vacate the property. A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

    Officers responded to an address on Jones Avenue in reference to a theft. While speaking with our team, the caller stated that his wife’s bicycle was missing from underneath their house. A report was filed, and the caller was provided with information for follow-up.
