• One of our officers responded to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to a financial transaction card scam.

    During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the victim had received a call from someone stating that her grandson had been arrested and needed money. She then attempted to send the person $3500 through “Zelle”, but her bank flagged the transfer as suspicious and would not let it go through.

    It should be noted that this is a known phone scam. If you receive a similar call, please do not send the caller any money, or provide them with any personal information.

    Just before midnight, one of our officers noticed a man sleeping on the property of a closed business. He also noted that the man matched the description of a suspect who been spending the night on other nearby properties without permission.

    After waking the man, the officer learned that he had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. While the warrant was out of pick-up range, the officer placed him under arrest for Loitering and Prowling.

  • Officers responded to a business on Tybrisa Street in reference to harassment.

    While speaking with our team, the manager stated that an older man had come into the business several times that day to talk to the young female employees. The manager further stated that the man never bought anything but instead spent his time telling one employee that she was “beautiful” and constantly remarking on her looks. While he was no longer on scene, the manager asked that he be banned.

    During a check of the area, officers located the man nearby and issued a Criminal Trespass warning. A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding and failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the teenaged driver, the officer was able to smell the odor of marijuana wafting through his open window. When confronted about the smell, the teen initially denied having drugs in the car. After being informed that the vehicle was going to be searched, however, he admitted to having less than an ounce.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the driver had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. As he was being placed under arrest, the teenager asked if he would be able to get his marijuana back upon release. Though the answer was a definite “NO”, it was at least worth a shot, right?

    After booking him on the charges of Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, and DUI, the officers placed his jar of marijuana into the evidence room marked for destruction.

  • Just before 8:00PM, one of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding and failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that he was wearing sunglasses and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked for his registration, the man opened his glove compartment, revealing an open container of alcohol in plain view.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, Open Container, and DUI.

    While conducting an inventory of the vehicle, officers also found several loose pills, earning him an extra charge of Drugs Not in the Original Container.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 45mph in a 30mph zone.

    While talking to the teenaged driver, the officer learned that they had a class CP license, or “Learner’s Permit”. There were four other teens in the car as well, which was a violation of the driver’s permit.

    At that time, the officer cited the driver accordingly and contacted their parents to retrieve them and the vehicle.

    Officers responded to a local marina in reference to an unwanted guest on the property.

    While speaking with our team, the caller pointed out a man who he said had previously been verbally banned. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the suspect was repeatedly belligerent towards both the caller, and the officer, and refused to comply with even simple instructions. At one point, the officer learned that the man had an active warrant through another jurisdiction for his arrest.

    At that time, the man attempted to run away, prompting the officer to activate his Taser while ordering the man to stop. Realizing that he preferred going to jail without being tased, the man decided to surrender. He was then placed under arrest for Obstruction and transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center on his non-local warrant.

  • Officers responded to a report of a fight at a local ice cream parlor. During the course of the investigation, our team learned that a couple had become in a physical altercation with another patron over where the line began. According to both the victim, and a witness, the couple instigated the fight, which led to the victim defending himself.

    The couple were then placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct.

  • Around 2:30AM, one of our officers walked out of the Tybee Island Police Department and found a man in a golf cart in the parking lot.

    When asked if he was ok, the man replied that he was “trying to get back to Jones Avenue, where his AirBnB was”. During the course of their conversation, the officer noticed that the man slurred his words as he spoke. When asked to step off of the golf cart, the man lost his balance and almost fell. The officer then asked the man how much alcohol he had that evening, to which he replied, “a lot”. Closer inspection also revealed an open container of alcohol on the cart.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the cart while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Open Container and DUI.

    While on an unrelated call for service, several officers watched a fight break out in front of a local bar.

    After the parties were separated, one man claimed that the bouncer had attacked him “for no reason”. According to the bouncer, however, the man had been kicked out of the bar earlier that evening. When he returned sometime later, he began to “trash talk” the bouncer, before attempting to gain entry by pushing past him. At that time, the bouncer took him to the ground.

    During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the man had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. He was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center on his non-local warrant.

  • Just after 7:30AM, one of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 60mph in a 30mph zone and failing to maintain its lane.

    As he approached the vehicle, the officer was able to spot the driver putting on a shirt and attempting to button his pants. Once at the window, the officer noticed that the man’s eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. During the course of their conversation, the man became loud and belligerent with the officer, at one point insisting that he “couldn’t search his vehicle”.

    At that time, a K9 Officer responded to the scene and alerted during an open-air sniff of the vehicle. A subsequent search based on probable cause revealed a glass smoking device that contained burned residue.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the man informed the officer that he had been drinking into the early morning, but “didn’t have that much”. When asked if he would be willing to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, the man refused. When asked to provide his name and date of birth, he also refused.

    He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, Reckless Driving, No License on Person, Removing/Affixing Tag to Conceal the Identity of a Vehicle, Possession of Drug Related Objects, Obstruction, and DUI (Less Safe).
