A woman came to the Tybee Island Police Department to report having received threatening text messages.

During the investigation, the officer noticed that the suspect had sent a number of non-sensical text messages and voicemails, but nothing that was overtly threatening in nature. As a result, a report was filed, and the complainant was advised on the procedures for obtaining a temporary protective order.

Officers responded to the intersection of Miller Avenue and 2nd Street in reference to an accident with injuries.

During the course of the investigation, officers learned that a motorist had been looking at his cell phone when he ran a stop sign and struck two bicyclists. One of the victims was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

The motorist was placed under arrest and charged with a Hands-Free violation, Too Fast for Conditions, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign and Reckless Driving.

A family came to the Tybee Island Police Department after their small child accidentally ingested over the counter medication.

Officers attended to the child and parents until the arrival of emergency medical personnel. The child was then transported to an area hospital for further treatment. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding.

As the officer attempted to speak with the driver, the male passenger became belligerent and began to yell over him. While subsequently talking to the angry passenger, the officer noticed he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink wafting through his open window. After de-escalating the situation, the officer issued the driver a written warning and allowed them to continue on their way.

A short time later, the officer spotted the belligerent passenger walking down the sidewalk, yelling towards the officer as he attempted to wave him down. As the officer pulled over, he learned that the man had called 911 and was currently yelling at the dispatcher. After making an unsuccessful attempt at reasoning with the man, the officer placed him under arrest on the charge of Public Drunkenness.

Officers responded to a local motel in reference to a domestic disturbance.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that one of the parties involved had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. She was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for her non-local warrant.

Officers responded to a local nursing home in reference to found property.

While speaking with our team, a staff member stated that an unauthorized firearm had been found in a patient’s room. When asked about the gun, the patient claimed to have found it in a nearby parking lot, “months ago”. An officer then took custody of the weapon and transported it to the Tybee Island Police Department where it was placed into an evidence locker for safekeeping.

A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

Officers responded to a local motel in reference to people setting off fireworks in the parking lot.

Upon their arrival, they learned that as a result of the illegal firework activity, a nearby trash can had caught fire. While checking the area, officers located one of the suspects hiding behind a nearby bush. After being confronted, the suspect shoved past officers and attempted to run away. He was then tased and placed under arrest for Prohibited Fireworks Activity and Obstruction.

A second suspect was located and placed under arrest for Prohibited Fireworks Activity and Giving a False Name/Date of Birth to law enforcement officers.

A report was filed, and the case was closed by arrest.

An officer responded to the area of Chatham and Inlet in reference to found property.

While speaking with our teammate, a concerned citizen gave him a fanny pack that had been found in the area. Closer inspection revealed that the bag contained a driver’s license, miscellaneous personal items, and over $500 in cash. During the course of the investigation, the officer was able to make contact with the rightful owner and made arrangements to reunite him with his property.

A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

One of our officers stopped a vehicle for having a defective brake light.

While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were glossy and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man replied that he “had three all night”.

During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with a Taillight Violation, Driving While License Suspended, and DUI (Less Safe).

An officer responded to a short-term vacation rental on 2nd Avenue in reference to found property.

While speaking with our teammate, a representative from the management company pointed out two firearms that had been left behind by a previous tenant. The officer then took custody of the firearms and transported them to the Tybee Island Police Department for safekeeping.

A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.
