A woman came to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to a possible theft. While speaking with one of our supervisors, she stated that she and her family had set up a tent and several chairs on the beach before leaving to go eat. Upon their return that afternoon, the tent and chairs were missing.
A report was filed, and the woman was provided with information for follow-up.

An officer responded to a local nursing home in reference to a missing patient. While speaking with our teammate, the director stated that a patient had checked herself out the day before and had not yet returned. During the course of their conversation, it was determined that the patient was under no legal obligation to come back to the facility.
A report was filed at the request of the director, and no further action was taken during that time.

Officers responded to a residence on 7th Avenue in reference to a structure fire. As Tybee Island Firefighters battled the blaze, our team established a perimeter and performed crowd control duties for the safety of everyone involved.

Officers responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into the tree line near Highway 80 and Byers.
Upon their arrival, our team noted that the vehicle had sustained extensive damage from striking several trees before coming to rest in a marshy area. While talking to the driver, officers noticed that she had difficulty maintaining her balance and that she slurred her words as she spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink surrounding her body. When asked how much alcohol she had that day, the woman admitted to having “two”.
She was then issued citations for Reckless Driving and DUI, before being released into the custody of EMS for medical treatment.

Officers responded to an address on Robinson Avenue in reference to a possible Burglary.
While speaking with our team, Tybee Island Firefighters stated that they had been dispatched to the residence in reference to a fire alarm. Once on scene, they heard what they believed to be someone moving around inside of the building.
After clearing the residence and finding no one inside, officers gave the “all clear” for firefighters to deactivate the alarm.
A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

Officers responded to the beach near 2nd Street, in reference to someone passed out in the sand while the tide was rising.
Once on scene, our team found a man lying face down among the dune vegetation. After assessing the man’s condition, EMS personnel determined that he was not in need of medical treatment and was “just very intoxicated”. The man was then placed under arrest, and charged with Sleeping in Public Areas, Disturbing Dune Vegetation, and Public Drunkenness.

Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Highway 80. As a result of the collision, one of the vehicles had also crashed into a gate belonging to a nearby residence, forcing it open.
An accident report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

One of our officers responded to the parking lot of a local gas station in reference to a man slumped over inside of his vehicle.
While walking towards the vehicle, the officer was able to smell a strong odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink billowing through the open window. He also noted that the man in the driver’s seat appeared to be asleep and was sweating profusely.
After waking the man, the officer could see that his eyes were bloodshot and that there was an open can of beer in the center console. When asked how much alcohol he had that day, the man replied, “too much”.
After declining to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, he was placed under arrest and charged with Open Container and DUI (Less Safe).

Officers responded to a local bar in reference to a fight.
While speaking with our team, a witness stated that the fight was the result of the suspect pulling a chair out from under a woman, causing her to fall face first into the bar. During the course of the investigation, the owner of the establishment provided officers with security camera footage, which confirmed that account of events.
The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Simple Battery.

An officer responded to a local condominium complex in reference to several juveniles trespassing in the pool area.
While speaking with our team, the president of the Homeowner’s Association asked that all of the juveniles be formally banned from the property. Each were then issued a Criminal Trespass notice and informed that they would be subject to arrest if they returned. A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

A woman called the police department to report an accident.
While speaking with our team, she stated that while walking on 15th Street, her foot had been run over by a passing vehicle. According to the woman, the driver immediately stopped to check on her, but they both agreed that the accident was not serious enough to involve police. The driver then provided her with his information and left the scene. Sometime later, her injuries prompted her to seek medical treatment, during which she learned that a report was needed for insurance purposes.
Officers later made contact with the driver, who confirmed her story and cooperated with the investigation. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

One of our officers stopped a vehicle for having a suspended registration.
While talking to the driver, the officer caught the odor of marijuana seeping through the open window. When asked, the man admitted to smoking an hour or two before the stop.
A subsequent search of the vehicle, based on probable cause, revealed a bag of marijuana and two firearms. This became particularly problematic when it was discovered that the driver was a convicted felon.
During the course of the investigation, the officer also found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of drugs. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Suspended Registration, DUI (Less Safe), and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Officers responded to an address on Butler Avenue in reference to a man with a gun attempting to enter the victim’s house.
Once on scene, officers found the suspect on the front porch of the residence and confirmed that he had a holstered gun on his hip. While detaining the man and relieving him of his weapon, they noticed that he slurred his words whenever he spoke.
Officers then talked with the victim, who stated that he originally spotted the man stumbling around his yard on a security camera. When he confronted the stranger, the man had mumbled something unintelligible, before saying “you don’t want to get shot”. The victim then decided to call the police.
Following the investigation, officers placed the suspect under arrest and charged him with Disorderly Conduct, Loitering or Prowling, Public Drunkenness, and Criminal Trespass.
