• One of our officers responded to a local condominium building in reference to found property. Upon his arrival, the cleaning crew pointed out a firearm that had been left behind by a previous guest. The officer took custody of the weapon and placed it into our property room for safekeeping.

    An officer responded to an address on General George Marshall Boulevard in reference to a possible theft. While speaking with our teammate, the victim stated that someone had stolen a section of garden fencing from his yard the night prior. He then provided the officer with video, which showed someone on a golf cart taking the fencing before driving away.

    A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

    One of our officers responded to the North Beach parking lot in reference to an incident of Entering an Auto. While speaking with the victims, the officer learned that someone had stolen several debit cards from their vehicle. A check of their accounts showed that the cards had already been used at a store on nearby Whitemarsh Island. Both of the victims were then advised to cancel the cards in order to prevent further theft.

    A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

  • While on foot patrol, one of our officers found a wallet lying on the ground. During a subsequent check of the area, the officer located the owner fishing nearby. A report was filed, and the wallet was returned to the fisherman.

    An officer stopped a vehicle after spotting the driver holding a cell phone. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer learned that the driver had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. He was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.

    One of our officers responded to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to a possible theft.

    While speaking with our teammate, the victim stated that someone had stolen his kayak from where it had been left on the beach. A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

  • An officer responded to the River’s End Campground in reference to someone that had not paid for their stay. While speaking with the staff, the officer learned that a man had set up camp after hours and left a note requesting to be contacted for payment. Despite several attempts to reach him, however, the staff had been unable to make contact. As a result, they asked that he be removed and banned from the property.

    The officer then spoke with the man and informed him that he would be subject to arrest if he ever returned. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle due to the registered owner having an active warrant. While speaking with the driver, the officer noticed that the man immediately became argumentative and defensive. When asked for his license, the man reportedly stated that he “didn’t consent to searches” and responded to other questions by saying that he “did not want to aid in the investigation”.

    During the course of their interactions, the officer noticed that the man’s eyes were bloodshot and that there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from his body. When asked if he was willing to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, the man simply remained silent.

    He was then placed under arrest, and charged with DUI (Less Safe), before being transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for his non-local warrant.

    An officer stopped a vehicle for traveling 54mph in a 30mph zone and failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed a smell similar to that of an alcoholic drink wafting through the open window. The only other occupant in the vehicle at the time was a 9-year-old child.

    When asked, the driver admitted to having “one club cocktail” earlier that day. During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, DUI (.08 or more), and Endangering a Child While DUI.

    Another officer took custody of the child and remained with them until the driver was book and released.

  • An officer responded to a short-term vacation rental in reference to found property. While speaking with our teammate, cleaning staff provided him with a loaded magazine for a handgun, which was left behind by a previous tenant. The officer then took custody of the item and deposited it into our property room for safekeeping.

    Officers of the Tybee Island Police Department received a “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) from another agency, in reference to a wanted person. According to that agency, a subject they had a warrant for had been spotted by a FLOCK license plate reader as they arrived on the island.

    After locating the vehicle, officers conducted a traffic stop. While speaking with the driver, our team was able to confirm that he was indeed the person with the warrant. He was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.

    Officers responded to the area of 14th Street, beachside, in reference to a crash between a motor vehicle and a bicycle.

    While speaking with our team, the bicyclist stated that he was in a marked crosswalk with his children, when his bicycle was struck by a passing vehicle. The bicyclist then followed the vehicle to the next intersection, where he confronted the driver who had stopped for a traffic light.

    While speaking with the driver, officers noticed a smell similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from his breath. When asked, the man admitted to having a “Bloody Mary” shortly before the accident. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with a Crosswalk Violation, Failure to Yield While Entering the Roadway, Hit and Run, and DUI (Less Safe).

  • While on patrol, one of our officers spotted an unattended purse lying on the ground. He then took custody of the purse and deposited it into our property room for safekeeping.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 56mph in a 30mph zone.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked if he had any alcohol that day, the man reportedly replied, “Ehhhhh…” before shaking his head “no”. During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found evidence to suggest that the man was being less than truthful. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Expired License, Open Container, and DUI (.08 or more).

  • An officer stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane, following too closely behind the vehicle in front of it, and having a defective tag light.

    As the officer approached the driver’s window, he noticed that the man was holding his cell phone to his ear and speaking into it. When asked for his driver’s license, the man handed the officer one that was not his own. During the course of this exchange, officers noticed that the man’s eyes were bloodshot, and that there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink wafting through his open window.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest on the charges of Following Too Closely, Failure to Maintain Lane, Tag Light Required, Hands Free Violation, Open Container, and DUI (Less Safe).

    During the booking process, the man attempted to provide officers with false information and eventually admitted to stealing the driver’s license off of the beach. This led to additional charges of Obstruction, Driving While License Suspended, Use of a Fraudulent Driver’s License, and Theft of Mislaid Property.

    Officers responded to a local ice cream shop in reference to a possible theft. While speaking with our team, employees stated that a man had stolen $5.00 out of their tip jar. Officers successfully located the man nearby, but the store declined to pursue charges. The suspect was then issued a criminal trespass notice and informed that he would be subject to arrest if he ever returned.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Officers responded to the beach near 15th Street in reference to a disorderly person. According to the information provided to dispatch, a man had been seen rummaging through other people’s belongings, threatening bystanders with a pole, and exposing himself to children.

    Upon their arrival, officers located a man matching the suspect’s description. At that time, they noticed that a large tear in his pants had left his genitals exposed, and that his fist was clenched around an unknown object, which he held above his head in a threatening manner.

    When told to get on the ground, the man refused. As officers attempted to take him into custody, he pulled his arms away and reportedly told officers that he would “kill them”. When they finally got the man in handcuffs, officers found that the object in his hand was a lollipop.

    While being escorted to a patrol vehicle, the man continued to struggle against officers and was heard to make several more threatening statements about killing them.

    While subsequently checking the area, officers located the suspect’s belongings, which included a metal pole. They also located witnesses, who stated that prior to the arrival of officers, the suspect had been seen rummaging through the belongings of other beachgoers. Whenever anyone got close to him, the suspect would reportedly swing the metal pole in their direction, while threatening their lives.

    As a result, the suspect was charged with Public Drunkenness, Loitering or Prowling, Public Indecency, Obstruction (Felony), Terroristic Threats, and Aggravated Assault.

    Officers responded to the area of Butler and 11th in reference to a possible injured person. While checking the area, officers located a man lying on the steps of a nearby residence. As they approached, the immediately recognized him as someone who had been warned several times about sleeping in public and on other people’s property. When asked if he had been drinking, the man confirmed that he had and claimed that he was “just waiting for a ride”. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Loitering or Prowling and Public Drunkenness.
