TYBEE ISLAND, GA — The Tybee Island Police Department is proud to announce it has been awarded a $20,000.00 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The vital funding, which runs through September 2027, will be used to purchase six Dell Pro Rugged laptops to completely modernize the mobile computing capabilities of the department's Patrol Division.

The department actively pursued this grant to solve a critical operational need: replacing aging hardware and standardizing technology across the patrol fleet. In modern law enforcement, a patrol vehicle functions as a mobile precinct. Having reliable, high-speed access to data while in the field is no longer a luxury—it is a baseline requirement for keeping the community safe.

"This grant is incredibly important to our department and the island we protect," said Tiffany Hayes, Chief of Police. "By replacing our older systems with standardized, rugged laptops, we are ensuring that our officers have uninterrupted access to mission-critical databases and call information exactly when they need it most. It allows our officers to stay out on the streets, visible, writing reports and responding to calls efficiently, rather than being tied to a desk at the police station. I also want to thank the officers who work closely with the GOHS in helping our department secure this much-needed grant. They saw a need and helped fulfill that need."

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety task is to implement programs designed to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Georgia's roadways. GOHS targets highway safety problems through funding state and local law enforcement grants.

Through this partnership with GOHS, the Tybee Island Police Department continues to invest in the tools necessary to optimize response times, enhance officer efficiency, and maintain a safe environment for all residents and visitors.
