• Officers responded to an address on Lewis Avenue in reference to a report of suspicious people on the property.

While speaking with our team, the caller stated that his neighbor reported seeing a motor home parked in his driveway, and two men walking back and forth from his backyard. The men were gone by the time the caller returned home, and the motor home was last seen in the parking lot of a local bar.

Officers then responded to the bar and made contact with the two men. During the course of their conversation, one of the men informed the officers that hadn’t been on the island in several years and mistakenly believed that the house in question belonged to a friend. He then agreed to return to the residence with the officer to apologize for the mistake and retrieve some of his personal property that had been left behind.

A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found evidence to suggest that the driver was in the midst of a medical emergency. He then requested emergency medical personnel to respond to the scene and used the driver’s phone to notify their family of the situation.

The driver was transported to a local hospital for further treatment, and their vehicle was turned over to a family member. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

  • While monitoring traffic, one of our officers checked a vehicle’s speed at 60mph in a 30mph zone. When the officer attempted to perform a traffic stop, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, running several stop signs in an apparent attempt to flee. The short pursuit came to an abrupt end, however, when the speeding vehicle collided head-on with a tree.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer found the unconscious driver slumped over the steering wheel. As our team called for medics and attempted to provide aid, they observed several open containers of alcohol within the vehicle.

After regaining consciousness, the driver informed officers that they intentionally crashed the vehicle into the tree in hopes of killing themselves. As a result of the incident, the driver was charged with Speeding, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, Reckless Driving, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement, Open Container, and DUI (Less Safe). The driver was then transported to an area hospital for treatment and mental health evaluation.

A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

  • Officers responded to the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion in reference to a possible theft.

While speaking with our team, the manager stated that over the past several weeks, two combination locks and a set of keys had gone missing from the pier. Then, on the morning of the call, a contractor opened a shed on the property and discovered a strange bicycle inside. The manager provided officers with the description of a suspicious man that had been seen loitering in the area and stated his belief that the man was responsible.

Later that morning, officers responded back to the pier after the suspect returned to the area. Upon their arrival, they found him riding a yellow bicycle. While speaking with our team, the suspect claimed that he “had been staying wherever he could on the island” for the past 100 days. During the course of their conversation, the man denied stealing the keys, claiming instead that he “found them”. He then pulled the missing keys from his pocket and provided them to officers.

The man was then placed under arrest and charged with Theft of Mislaid Property. During the course of a follow-up investigation, it was discovered that both the bicycle the suspect had been seen riding, and the one found in the shed, and had been reported stolen from a local hotel last November.
