One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.
While talking to the driver, the officer noticed loose marijuana on the man’s pants, as the odor wafted through the open window.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The odor of MARIJUANA…not the man’s pants.
During a search of the vehicle based on probable cause, officers discovered a handgun in the center console. This became especially problematic, when it was learned that the driver was a convicted felon. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, No License on Person, Driving While License Suspended, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Later that same morning, another officer stopped a vehicle for having an expired registration.
During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended and she had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. The woman was then placed under arrest and charged with Expired Registration and Driving While Suspended. After being booked at our facility, she was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for non-local warrant.

Just before noon, one of our officers responded to a residence on Marsh Creek Cove in reference to a possible scam.
While speaking with our team, the complainant stated that she received a call from a man who identified himself as “Alex”, and claimed to work for Walmart in Alberta, Canada. During the call, “Alex” claimed that someone had used her information to open a Walmart account and purchased $1,839.36 dollars’ worth of electronics in the complainant’s name. He also claimed that the suspects used that same information to open seven different bank accounts from various financial institutions. He then asked for her Social Security number to get the situation sorted out. When she refused, “Alex” claimed that he was going to transfer her to the Social Security Administration, before hanging up.
She later received another call from the same subject, this time with a Washington DC area code. When confronted about this, “Alex” claimed that he was now calling from his “secure line”. When the complainant informed him that she was calling the police, he hung up.
While checking her bank account, she did not see any evidence of the fraudulent activity that “Alex” claimed to be investigating.
A report was filed, and the complainant was provided with information for follow-up.

A man came to the Tybee Island Police Department to report a scam.
While speaking with our team, the man stated that he had recently purchased a vehicle from a woman on the island whom he met on Facebook Marketplace.
Sometime later, he brought the vehicle to the Tybee Island Police Department for a VIN verification. During this process, the inspecting officer informed him that while the vehicle had not been reported stolen, the title he had been provided by the woman appeared to be fraudulent. The man then followed up with the Department of Motor Vehicles who confirmed that the title was fake, and that the woman who sold him the car was not the registered owner.
A report was filed, and the victim was provided with information for follow-up.

Officers responded to a local hotel in reference to damage to property.
While speaking with our team, a manager stated that someone had damaged the women’s bathroom attached to their “Event Room”. She went on to explain that one of the toilets had been filled with “hotdogs and other garbage”, and that a picture of a penis had been drawn on the wall. During the course of the conversation, the manager stated that she suspected a former employee, who had apparently been living in a car on the property, was responsible.
At the request of the hotel, officers made contact with the employee and issued a Criminal Trespass notice, informing her that she would be arrested if she returned.
A report was filed, and the manager was provided with information for follow-up.
