• One of our officers stopped a vehicle for having a defective brake light.

    During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that vehicle’s registration was suspended and it did not have valid insurance. As a result, the driver was cited accordingly, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

  • Officers responded to a beach front parking lot in reference to a group of people on a golf cart allegedly threatening others on a nearby balcony. As an officer arrived on scene, the cart suddenly began to drive away, weaving as it went.

    After stopping the cart, the officer noticed that the driver’s eyes were bloodshot and that there was a smell similar to that of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. When asked if he had been drinking that evening, the man replied, “Yes sir”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with DUI (Less Safe).

  • While on patrol, one of our officers discovered a dumpster on fire behind the local grocery store. Tybee Fire responded on scene and extinguished the flames.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding and failing to maintain its lane.

    Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer found that the driver’s window was still rolled up. Knocking on the window to get the man’s attention, the officer noticed that the driver attempted to pass his license through the glass, causing it to bounce back into his lap. Once the window was finally rolled down, the officer noticed that the driver’s eyes were red and that his face was flushed. When asked, the man admitted to having “three drinks” several hours before.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, and DUI (Less Safe).

  • Just after midnight, one of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that her eyes were bloodshot and that she slurred her words as she spoke. There was also a strong odor similar to that of an adult drink flowing through her open window. When asked how much alcohol she had that evening, she indicated “one or two drinks”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Laner, and DUI (Less Safe).

    Later that evening, one of our officers stopped a golf cart for failing to use its headlights after dark.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were watery and that he had a delayed reaction to questions. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man admitted to “one espresso martini”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the cart while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Use Headlights After Dark, Open Container, and DUI (.08 or more).

  • A man came to the Tybee Island Police Department to turn over a bicycle he found in a pond at Jaycee Park. The bike was tagged as found property and secured for safekeeping.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were watery and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man initially denied having any, before changing his answer to “one drink”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Defective Equipment and DUI (.08 or more).
