When asked, the man admitted that he had been drinking at an establishment in Savannah earlier and was headed home. While speaking with our team, the caller provided them with camera footage from earlier that morning of a man sorting through his own belongings in an area underneath the residence.

    _____

While on patrol, officers received a “Be on the lookout” for a reckless driver headed towards the island.

After locating the vehicle, one of our officers stopped it for failing to maintain its lane. As the officer approached the car, the driver immediately became hostile, claiming that he “didn’t know why the officer pulled him over” and that he “used to work for DPW” (The Department of Public Works). As the officer attempted to explain the reason for the stop, the driver continued to argue. When asked to step out of the vehicle, the man refused and instead insisted on speaking to a supervisor.

After calling for his Sergeant, the officer again instructed the man to step out of the vehicle. When he continued to refuse, the officer pulled the door open and removed the man from the car. Once outside, the man began to struggle against the officer, while insisting that he “knew his rights” and refusing to allow himself to be handcuffed.

At one point, the man turned towards the officer and took an aggressive stance, prompting the officer to draw his Taser and aim it at the man’s torso. Realizing that he was about to tazed, the man eventually turned around and was successfully handcuffed.

During an inventory of the vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun under the passenger seat. The was taken for safekeeping, and the driver was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center where he was booked into custody on the charges of Failure to Maintain Lane and Obstruction.
