• One of our officers received a report in reference to Theft of Mislaid Property.

    While speaking with our teammate, the victim stated that he lost his phone on the beach sometime between August 2nd and August 6th. After obtaining a replacement phone, he noticed that the lost phone had been reactivated, and was now “pinging” in nearby Savannah, Georgia.

    A report was filed, and the victim was provided with information for follow-up.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were red and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink drifting through his open window. When asked how much he had to drink that evening, the man admitted to “a couple beers, that was it”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, Suspended Registration, Driving While License Suspended, and DUI (Less Safe).

    One of our officers responded to a short-term vacation rental in reference to found property.

    While speaking with the officer, cleaning staff pointed out a handgun that had been left behind by the previous tenant. After taking custody of the firearm, the officer was able to make contact with the owner and let them know that it could be retrieved from the Tybee Island Police Department.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man claimed that he had didn’t have any.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, No Driver’s License, Open Container, and DUI (Less Safe).

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 58mph in a 45mph zone.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that her eyes were bloodshot and that she slurred her words as she spoke. There was also a thick cloud of perfume pouring through her open window. Knowing that drivers sometimes use heavy “cover odors” to mask the smell of alcohol, the officer asked the woman how much she had to drink that evening. In response, the woman stated that she “doesn’t answer any questions”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence. She was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Seatbelt Violation, and DUI (Less Safe).

    While conducting an inventory of her vehicle prior to it being towed from the scene, officers located a bag of white powder which field tested positive for Cocaine. This earned her an additional charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance.

  • One of our officers responded to a local restaurant in reference to found property.

    While speaking with our teammate, employees stated that they found a purse which contained a handgun. After taking custody of the property, the officer spoke with the rightful owner and advised her that her items could be retrieved from the Tybee Island Police Department.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    One of our officers received a report in reference to damage to property.

    While speaking with our teammate, the victim stated that his truck had been “struck” sometime between August 24th and 25th. When asked where the incident happened, the victim provided three different locations on the island where he believed the damage may have occurred.

    A report was filed, and the victim was informed he would need to fill out a SR-13 form for insurance purposes. No further action was taken during that time.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to move into a clear lane while passing a traffic stop.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that the man’s eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked if he had any alcohol that evening, the man replied, “not too much”. When asked to clarify, he claimed to have had “one shot”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with a Move Over Violation, Failure to Maintain Lane, Taillight Violation, and DUI (.08 or more).

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    While speaking with the officer, the driver claimed that he worked for a rideshare service and had “just been driving through”. When asked why he didn’t have any markings identifying his vehicle as a rideshare, the man claimed that he had been “unable to receive them”. During the course of their conversation, the officer noticed that the man’s eyes were bloodshot and “watery”. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man claimed that he didn’t have any.

    A subsequent investigation revealed additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane and DUI (Less Safe).

  • Officers responded to the River’s End Campground in reference to a subject that had previously been banned from the property.

    While speaking with our team, staff stated that a man who had been previously banned had attempted to register at the campground using a different FIRST name. Everything else, from his last name to his email address matched previous registrations. According to the staff, the many issues they’d experienced from the man in the past included accumulating multiple noise complaints, providing fake payment information, refusing to leave after checkout, and demanding to purchase the campground for himself.

    Officers then made contact with the man and placed him under arrest for Criminal Trespass. During booking, our team found several bills of various dominations which were rolled into makeshift straws and covered in a white powder. As a result, the man received an additional charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine).

    A woman came to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to a possible theft.

    While speaking with one of our officers, the woman stated that she attempted to send a friend $500 through Zelle but accidentally sent the money to the wrong person. When she contacted the recipient and asked for the money back, the person accused her of being a “scam” and blocked her number.

    A report was filed, and the woman was provided with information for follow-up.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 43mph in a 30mph zone.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were red and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an adult beverage billowing through his window, and an open container in plain view.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Expired Registration, and DUI.

    While removing the open container from the vehicle, the officer also noticed white powder and loose pills, believed to be Cocaine and Oxycodone, respectively. He also located a small scale, and a handgun. As a result, the driver received additional charges of Drugs Not in the Original Container, Possession of Drug Related Objects, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

    After stopping the vehicle, the officer noticed that the driver’s eyes were red and that she slurred her words as she spoke. She also seemed to have difficulty answering questions or following simple instructions.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the cart while under the influence. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Open Container and DUI (Less Safe).

  • One of our officers stopped a golf cart for not having a functioning amber light.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. When asked if he had any alcohol that evening, the man admitted to having “two beers” at a local bar.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the cart while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Golf Cart Violations, and DUI (.08 or more).

    One of our officers spotted a golf cart on Tybrisa Street and noticed that none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

    After stopping the cart, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. He was then placed under arrest and charged accordingly.

    While on patrol, one of our officers was flagged down in reference to a disorderly person outside of a nearby bar.

    Upon further investigation, the officer spotted the shirtless subject yelling and cussing while being restrained by a friend.

    Despite being warned several times to leave, the man continued to yell and scream before kicking a trashcan into the street. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Public Drunkenness and Disorderly Conduct.
